Consequences Of A Failed Military Drug Test

The military does not have the right to refuse to take a test in most cases. Generally, military applicants are able to retake a failed drug test at a Military Entry Processing Station (MEPS). Depending on the service branch, recruits who test positive for drugs may reapply 90 days after the previous test.

However, if you fail the second test, you may be barred from serving in any branch of the military in the future. If the commander of a military unit has reason to believe that a member is using drugs, he can ask the installation commander (I.C) for a search warrant.

I.C has the power to issue military search warrants after consultation with the Judge Advocate General. The military has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to drug testing. However, there are no standard consequences for failed military drug tests.

Defense Department Undersecretary for Personnel and Training Gilbert R. Cisneros Jr. issued a memo last week to military departments advising service members to "cautiously" avoid foods and baked goods containing seeds. At MEPS, you take an occupational test to determine your military potential.

You will undergo a physical examination which includes blood and urine tests for alcohol and drugs. If you pass all the tests, a counselor will discuss your military career with you. If you don't pass, thanks but no thanks, good luck in your future endeavors.

The Department of Defense developed an intensive drug testing policy in the 1980s to combat drug use among the military.
